Online Gambling In Tamil Nadu

Even though online gambling is extremely lucrative, it can at times be addictive. The sheer ease with which one can make money is often exploited and misused.

One must always play it in control and moderation and should know one’s risk appetite.

Now in a shocking news that has surfaced from Tamil Nadu, a 37-year-old has killed himself after failing in online gambling.

According to a few sources, there have been threats and harassments from representatives of loan apps after the man had borrowed Rs. 20 lakhs.

The man who was identified as a medical representative has left behind a suicide note where in he urged the government to ban online gambling.

This shocking and disturbing news has prompted the Tamil Nadu government to take some stringent action to prevent further loss of lives due to online gambling.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has now returned a specific bill which targeted the ban of online gambling and to regulate the online games in the state.

“The Governor has raised a few queries. The Speaker’s office has received it,” said a source in the law department to NDTV.

As per a government official, there have been 44 deaths in Tamil Nadu in recent times because of online gambling. This was essentially the reason why the government has decided to reinstate the bill.

Tamil Nadu Governor Returns Bill On Online Gaming

“The Governor has said that the state does not have the competence. We will be re-introducing the Bill and sending it to him stating that we have the competence since the issue comes under the State list in the Constitution so only a state government can pass this Bill,” said a law minister to reporters, last week.

Last month, M Gunaseelan who was aged 26 committed suicide as he lost Rs. 20 lakhs due to online gambling. He had dropped out of college and was working in a restaurant.

There are several other incidents that have transpired in Tamil Nadu, India. When the DMK had come to power in the South Indian state, they had orchestrated a bill after a few recommendations from a special committee headed by Justice K Chandru.

This particular bill also makes a few classifications for the games and have written them down as “games of chance” which are essentially under the control of a computer algorithm.

If online gambling is done in moderation, then there will never be an issue. Whenever one gets into an addictive phase and starts borrowing money for the same, the problems arise.

One must play online gambling games for fun and during their leisure time and not make it into a habit.
